ADU = accessory dwelling unit, aka: granny flat, An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a secondary, independent living space on the same property as a primary home, featuring its own kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area, often called a granny flat or in-law suite.
ADUs can be detached, attached, or created by converting existing spaces (like a garage or basement) within the main house, providing flexible housing for family, renters, or aging relatives. They must meet local zoning and building codes, often have specific size limits, and are designed to be smaller than the main residence.

There's a reason SDRE's ADUs are not all rented or sold and the company has liens on many of their properties by the City of San Diego. Who wants to live in 441 sqft and pay rent of $2500-$3100, with no parking and know the neighbors won't be bringing over a plate of cookies as a welcome gift.
